What is USC’s Permanent Residence Sponsorship Policy?
USC will sponsor international faculty and staff for permanent residence (a “green card”), where their employment qualifies and where the department will support the process. Learn more »[Click to LPR Policy]
How does the process begin?
If your case qualifies under the university sponsorship policy, the department administrator who will handle the paperwork should call the main FSVS number at 213-740-5257 to make an appointment for a consultation. The consultation meeting will include you, the FSVS Director, an authorized department representative, and any other interested parties, as appropriate. In this meeting options and strategy will be discussed, as well as costs and fees.
Who sets the strategy for my case?
FSVS has the subject matter expertise in-house and through our own attorneys to strategize the best solution for you and your department.
Who pays for the process?
Your department and the university will pay sponsorship costs through the I-140 stage (which can include advertising, government fees, attorney fees and more). You will be responsible for paying all costs associated with your I-485 “green card” application. Costs and fees will be discussed in detail in your consultation.
Can’t I just hire my own lawyer to take care of everything?
Please note that outside attorneys are not authorized to prepare immigration applications or petitions that require the university to sponsor the individual. Additionally, signatures at the department and school level on these types of petitions/applications are not authorized.
However, you may decide to pursue a self-sponsored permanent residence case independently of the university’s assistance. FSVS is happy to provide information on working with U.S. immigration attorneys. Learn more »[Click to Atty Info]
